This semester, I need to create a new, high-quality required course in Sociological research methods that engages students in actual research and active learning, yet is conducted in a large-class format that can be taught by different faculty.

The author of Principles of Sociological Inquiry: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods, Amy Blackstone, started envisioning this textbook while sitting in her own undergraduate sociology research methods class. She enjoyed the material but wondered about its relevance to her everyday life and future plans (the idea that one day she would be teaching such a class hadn’t yet occurred to her).

Julie Song graduated from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), in 2001 with her bachelor’s degrees in English and Sociology. She was then accepted into the PhD program in 2002 at UCI, where she spent the next seven years earning her Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Sociology. Her research interests included: immigration, the children of immigrants, and race and ethnic inequalities. Her book (forthcoming), Holier Than Thou: 1.5 and Second Generation Korean American Christians and Assimilation investigated how religion and social class shapes assimilation into American life.
While at UCI, Dr. Song taught as a professor at UCI, Irvine Valley College, and Chapman University. She earned the Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Award in 2005, and the Outstanding Graduate Student Professor Award in 2006. She also worked as a program coordinator for Global Connect, which connected University professors with underprivileged high school students enrolled in the AVID program. Global Connect helped educate equipped students learn valuable human capital about higher education. Professor Song has also taught extensively online since 2005. She has taught at two universities, including the American Public University System, where she teaches Introduction to Sociology and Research Methods.
In 2008, Dr. Song was hired at a local college, as a full time professor in the Sociology department. In addition to teaching, Dr. Song has served as the faculty advisor for the Feminist Club for 3 years, has worked in the success center on weekends to offer out of class tutoring and workshops on how to be a better student, and is currently the director of Honors Program.
Julie also serves on the board of directors for her Homeowner’s Association, and for a non-profit organization, called America's Best Chance, which funds college students who do not qualify for funding. For fun, she enjoys reading, creative writing, cooking, gardening, long distance running, (having completed nearly 20 half marathons all around the United States!), playing with her two dogs, and traveling with her husband, Mike.
Instead of teaching passive knowledge from a textbook, I want to design the course around active learning and use of sociological research methods. Students will conduct small-scale but high-quality sociological research of various types, and understand the appropriate uses of the different types. Assessments will be research projects, conducted in groups and individually. To achieve this goal, they will need to engage in collaboration, data collection and analysis, critical thinking, assessment, presenting work, and engagement with sociological literature. The class will be taught with up to 125 students, with the professor and a reader/grader. This will create some constraints for active learning and collaborative research that I need to address using technology.
