In sum, Purkayastha abjures the mystification that swirl around temple dancers and aesthetics—themes that and other“classical” dance scholarship often harness. Modernity is not, theauthor emphasizes, the sole domain of the Western artist. The Asianchoreographer can decide to roll on the floor, and this does notmean the work is just derivative or “bastardized and illegitimate”(p. 6) as some critics contend. Rather, these new movementexplorations are a natural outgrowth of the history ofchoreographers who have lived lives that span the globe and crossborders. Modernity in Indian dance did not arrive with theEast-West Dance Encounter in 1985 where noted dance artistChandralekha (1928–2006) drew her line in the sand, abjuring thesimpering female mold of the (female lover).Stronger female images were already apparent Purkayastha contendsin the works of Tagore and Shankar in the early twentiethcentury.

Renu Kumar (Founder/Artistic Director/Choreographer and Principal Dancer) has worked as a master teacher and performer in Modern Indian/Bollywood/Folk dancing in the United States since 1986.
Originally from Muzaffarnager, Uttar Pradesh, India, Renu has extensive training in Classical North Indian Kathak and graduated from Meerut University with a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts and Masterous in Political Science. Dance is her passion from her childhood. She believes that her work covers an impressive range, from virtuoso traditional exposition of Modern Indian dance, through large-scale and always arresting adaptations of classics to boldly innovative creative collaborations with choreographers, designers, writers, directors and musicians. She sees dance as a primary medium of artistic discourse. For her, dance is like a form of yoga, which synchronizes the inner biorhythms with the movements of the body. The dancing in Bollywood films, especially older ones, is primarily modeled on Indian dance: classical dance styles, dances of historic northern Indian courtesans (tawaif), or folk dances. In modern films, Indian dance elements often blend with Western dance styles (as seen on MTV or in Broadway musicals), though it is not unusual to see Western pop and pure classical dance numbers side by side in the same film. The hero or heroine will often perform with a troupe of supporting dancers, usually of the same sex. If the hero and heroine dance and sing a pas-de-deux (a dance and ballet term, meaning "dance of two"), it is often staged in beautiful natural surroundings or architecturally grand settings.
